Being confined to a cottage in the midst of building chaos could be most people's idea of hell. But for one Wiltshire army wife, her builders turned out to be heaven-sent.

Accountant Alison Cotton spent months off work recovering from two painful knee operations while Richard Vincent Carpentry & Building constructed a new extension to her 200-year-old cottage.

With Alison's husband away in London during the week, the builders ensured that they not only caused minimal disruption during the construction of the garden room and hallway, but also strove to make her life as comfortable as possible.

"I just cannot speak highly enough of them.We were so lucky to have them," said Alison. "Our post-box is at the top of our drive up twenty steps. In the mornings they would bring me the post and put the dustbins out. They not only erected platforms to help me get in and out, they even built special steps for my cat! It was a pleasure to have Richard and his team working here. They never caused any awkwardness or inconvenience."

After Alison had returned to work it was the builder who dealt directly with suppliers, personally returning faulty goods.

Richard Vincent of Richard Vincent Carpentry & Building said: "We weren't happy with the quality of some oak beams that Mr and Mrs Cotton had been sold. We went back and sorted out some decent timber for them. In rural communities, business nearly always comes from word-of-mouth, so customer relations is a key part of our service."

The Cottons not only praised the outstanding craftsmanship of Richard Vincent and his team, but also his clear understanding of their vision. They said: "He appreciated from the first moment the quirkiness of our cottage. He personally distressed the beams, crafted curved skirting boards and curved walls around the windows. He even plastered free hand to create the effect we were looking for on the hottest day of the year!

"We can't sing his praises highly enough; we are so thrilled with what his team has created and at how they have conducted themselves."

The judges for the Master Builder of the Year Awards said: "The customer care aspects of this job went well beyond that required of a small country builder. Through his handling of this project, Richard Vincent has clearly demonstrated an outstanding level of support to his customer."
